There are moments when culture, community, and purpose align so seamlessly, they create something greater than the sum of their parts. The New York Chapter of CHUMS, Inc. delivered exactly that with its annual Women’s Empowerment Event—an afternoon where Black women didn’t just gather, they affirmed their collective power.

Hosted at the Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse on Long Island, the event was a masterclass in intentional excellence. From the first greeting to the final applause, every detail reflected a deeper truth: when Black women curate space for one another, the result is both transformative and enduring.

An Experience Rooted in Excellence

Set against a refined backdrop accented in emerald and gold, the atmosphere carried a quiet sophistication—equal parts elegance and intention. But beyond aesthetics, there was a deeper current running through the room: connection.

This was not performative networking. It was alignment. Women exchanging ideas, sharing lived experiences, and reinforcing a shared commitment to community advancement.

Programming with Purpose

Guided by Mistress of Ceremonies Temitope Famodimu, the program unfolded with precision and grace. Chaplain Karin Campbell opened with a prayer that centered the room, grounding attendees in reflection before the celebration began.

Chapter President Melanie Stewart welcomed guests with clarity and conviction, reinforcing the organization’s mission of service, scholarship, and sisterhood.

The Westbury Corps Ensemble and Dance Team infused the afternoon with artistic expression, blending music and movement in a way that honored both tradition and forward momentum.

Honoring Legacy in Real Time

At the heart of the event was recognition—of women whose contributions often happen far from the spotlight but leave lasting impact.

Carmen Lloyd, honored for community service, stood as a testament to what it means to lead through action. Barbara Edwards and Jeannine A. Corbin were also recognized, each embodying a legacy of commitment, resilience, and purpose.

These honors were not symbolic—they were affirmations of work that continues to shape lives and communities.

Leadership That Resonates

When Vanessa Baird-Streeter, President and CEO of the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, took the stage, the energy shifted with intention.

Introduced by Gwendolyn Enocher-Washington, her keynote address was both measured and powerful—an articulation of leadership that extends beyond titles into responsibility. She challenged the room to think beyond individual success and toward collective elevation.

It was a message that didn’t end with applause—it lingered.

Precision Behind the Power

What distinguished the event was not just its impact, but its execution.

Special acknowledgment is extended to Carolyn Barry-Ginyard, Fundraising Chair and Women’s Empowerment Co-Chair, whose leadership behind the scenes ensured a seamless experience. Her ability to align logistics with vision allowed the event to unfold with both polish and purpose.

It is often this level of intentional coordination that transforms a gathering into an experience.

Where Community Becomes Catalyst

Beyond the formal program, the event’s true strength revealed itself in the interactions between attendees. Conversations sparked collaborations. Introductions became opportunities. Moments of recognition evolved into shared inspiration.

This is where empowerment shifts—from concept to catalyst.

A Legacy That Continues

Through initiatives focused on service, scholarships, and community engagement, the New York Chapter of CHUMS, Inc. continues to build a legacy rooted in impact.

This Women’s Empowerment Event was not designed as a standalone moment—it was part of an ongoing commitment to creating spaces where Black women are supported, celebrated, and positioned to lead.

Because true empowerment is not fleeting. It is sustained, cultivated, and carried forward.
