If there’s one thing I know, it’s that tourism isn’t just about destinations — it’s about storytelling. And the U.S. Virgin Islands just added a new voice to the narrative. Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has nominated Jennifer Matarangas-King, a native of St. Croix and seasoned communications powerhouse, as the next Commissioner of Tourism.
Her résumé? Impressive doesn’t even begin to cover it. With more than 30 years in strategic communications, public affairs, and leadership, Matarangas-King is no stranger to steering big visions. From her early public service days as press secretary to Governor Roy Schneider to decades of corporate leadership at Viya, she’s been a force in both public and private sectors. And now, she’s bringing that expertise home — to the heart of the Virgin Islands’ most vital industry.
“Tourism is more than our economy. It’s how we tell our story to the world,” Gov. Bryan said. “Jennifer understands that.” And he’s right. She’s not just stepping into a leadership role; she’s inheriting a legacy. Under outgoing Commissioner Joseph Boschulte, the Department of Tourism shattered records — leading the Caribbean in Average Daily Rate (ADR), hitting all-time highs in air and cruise arrivals, and launching marketing campaigns that had travelers from across the globe saying, book me a ticket now.
For Matarangas-King, this isn’t just a title. “Tourism drives investment, fuels entrepreneurship, and celebrates our identity,” she shared. “I look forward to elevating our product, empowering our people, and expanding our reach as a premier Caribbean destination.”
Her vision is rooted in service, culture, and innovation — and with her deep ties to the territory, she’s uniquely positioned to keep the momentum going. Plus, with Boschulte staying on during the transition, the Department is set for a seamless handoff.
So, whether you’re craving the powder-soft beaches of St. John, the vibrant history of St. Thomas, or the rich cultural tapestry of St. Croix, you can bet the USVI will keep making waves in global tourism — with Jennifer Matarangas-King at the helm.
