Women-founded health technology company combines FDA-approved 3D breast ultrasound, a patient-centered experience, and emerging artificial intelligence to help make early detection more accessible.
For many women, scheduling a breast cancer screening can come with anxiety, discomfort, and uncertainty. From concerns about painful compression to questions about breast density and screening accuracy, the experience can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Now, a women-founded health technology company is working to change that conversation.
BeSound has officially opened its New York City flagship location in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, introducing a modern approach to breast health that combines FDA-approved 3D automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), a welcoming environment, and ambitious plans to incorporate artificial intelligence into breast imaging.
Founded by former NASA quantum physicist Bailey Renger, BeSound is challenging conventional thinking about how women access breast health services, particularly those with dense breast tissue.
Making Breast Cancer Screening More Comfortable and Accessible
One of BeSound’s biggest selling points is its emphasis on the patient experience.
Unlike traditional mammography, which requires breast compression and uses low-dose X-rays, BeSound’s ultrasound examination does not involve compression, ionizing radiation, or contrast dye.
The company describes its scanning experience as pain-free, although individual experiences may vary.
Women can book appointments online without a referral, with same-day appointments available and results typically delivered within 24 to 48 hours.
For women who have postponed supplemental breast imaging because of discomfort, scheduling challenges, or uncertainty, this approach could help remove some of the barriers to seeking care.
Why Breast Density Matters
Breast density is an important consideration in breast cancer detection, yet many women may not fully understand how it affects their screening results.
Dense breast tissue contains more fibrous and glandular tissue relative to fatty tissue. Because dense tissue and certain cancers can both appear white on mammograms, detecting abnormalities can become more difficult.
BeSound’s technology is designed to help address that challenge.
The company uses GE HealthCare’s Invenia ABUS system, an FDA-approved automated breast ultrasound technology developed for supplemental screening in women with dense breast tissue.
Unlike traditional handheld ultrasound, automated breast ultrasound captures standardized three-dimensional images of the breast, giving radiologists a more consistent set of images to evaluate.
Research cited by BeSound indicates that combining automated breast ultrasound with mammography can improve invasive cancer detection compared with mammography alone.
Importantly, ABUS is a supplemental screening technology, not a replacement for recommended mammograms. Women should discuss their breast density, personal risk factors, and appropriate screening options with their healthcare providers.
Artificial Intelligence Could Transform the Future of Breast Imaging
Beyond its physical flagship location, BeSound is developing a technology platform that could influence how physicians interpret breast imaging over time.
Its long-term vision centers on building an artificial intelligence layer trained on a growing collection of standardized breast ultrasound images.
The goal is to help radiologists evaluate scans more efficiently, identify subtle abnormalities, and compare changes in breast tissue across multiple examinations.
“Every BeSound scan captures a complete, standardized 3D image of the breast, and that consistency is what makes AI genuinely useful in breast imaging,” said Bailey Renger, founder and CEO of BeSound.
“We’re building the foundational AI layer that helps physicians read faster, spot subtle changes earlier, and follow a woman’s breast health over time instead of judging a single snapshot. AI doesn’t replace the physician. It can give them a sharper view, and it can give women answers sooner.”
While BeSound’s ultrasound technology is FDA-approved, its developing AI capabilities should not be confused with an independently established, FDA-cleared diagnostic AI product. The company is describing its future technological ambitions rather than announcing that those capabilities are already clinically validated.
A Women-Founded Company Addressing Women’s Health
There is something especially significant about a woman-founded company rethinking an experience that affects millions of women.
For years, conversations surrounding breast cancer screening have centered primarily on medical necessity. BeSound is bringing another important consideration into the discussion: how women actually experience healthcare.
Comfort, convenience, clear communication, and timely results are not luxuries. They can influence whether women feel empowered to participate in their healthcare decisions.
The opening also arrives during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder that conversations about early detection should extend beyond October.
According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed at a localized stage exceeds 99%. That statistic underscores the importance of timely diagnosis, although individual outcomes vary.
BeSound Looks Beyond New York City
The Flatiron flagship represents the beginning of BeSound’s broader expansion strategy.
By the end of 2026, the company anticipates offering insurance-covered scans through multiple New York insurers and expanding into additional markets.
Plans also include a mobile screening van and employer partnerships designed to reach more women in their communities.
These initiatives remain prospective, but they reflect the company’s goal of bringing specialized breast imaging beyond traditional hospital settings.
A New Conversation About Early Detection
At OMGCulture, we believe innovation in healthcare should be measured not only by the sophistication of the technology but also by its ability to improve people’s lives.
BeSound’s New York City flagship introduces an interesting possibility: a future where supplemental breast screening is easier to schedule, more comfortable to experience, and supported by increasingly sophisticated imaging tools.
The real test will be how effectively the company translates that vision into accessible, clinically reliable care for women across different communities.
For now, its Manhattan opening is another step toward expanding the choices available to women navigating their breast health.

Medical note: BeSound’s ABUS screening is intended to complement, not replace, recommended mammography. Screening decisions should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional. Clinical services available through the BeSound platform are provided by independent partner medical groups.
